Your PowerPoint presentation slides are timed to precision. As you speak, you realize that you have the audience eating out of your hand. They even laugh at the right spots. You realize that you are at the top of your game ... until

a power outage! No lights, no slides, no microphone ... no kidding. Could the timing have been worse? Half of the town is without electricity, and there you stand on the stage ... thinking to yourself, what am I going to do? Well thank God, your laptop is running on battery, so you can describe the slides in greater detail. When you do, you are surprised at the crowds reaction - thunderous applause.

This actually happened to Ricky Powell, DTM at LACE South - Chapman University. What amazed us all was the ease and calm with which Ricky used the circumstance to drive home the point - when life happens, and it will, choose happiness and joy! WOW! It was as if the Patron Saint of Public Speaking chose to immortalize Ricky with an unforgettable performance. How big was the impact of his presentation? Did you see you the last 10 seconds of the 2015 Michigan - Michigan State game? If you didn't, it was epic.

With confidence, composure, and clarity ... Ricky Powell nailed a "hole in one" blindfolded, with one arm tied behind his back. If you were there, you will be telling your grandchildren about the day the lights went out in Orange. If you weren't, well there's always LACE North ( January 30,2016 ) at Caltech.
The power of stories in your presentation make it likely that your audience will remember your message long after your final call to action. What makes a good story? Every word that draws an image for the listener helps you capture their attention and keep them engaged. This simple equation will help you craft a powerful story ...

When + Who + What ... provides you a great story template. Example, "it was a hot mid-summer's day and Jenny, Jackie, Josie and Mr. Whiskers jumped at the chance to ride in the pull along raft behind the large power boat." Can you imagine this happening? From the photo, finish writing the story. The opening words of the classic Moby Dick are timeless, because they paint a powerful picture. In case you find it difficult to relate to the older language, I have provided a paraphrase.

Call me Ishmael. Some years ago - never mind how long precisely - having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen, and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off--then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.

Consider this first paragraph from Moby Dick in the vernacular ...
Call me Al. A while back - don't worry about how long exactly - almost completely broke, and nothing holding me back, I thought I would join the Navy and see the world. Spending time at sea is my way of dealing with boredom. When I start getting depressed because it's cold outside I start thinking negative thoughts. I actually have been so depressed that I tried to pick myself up by crashing funerals. When that doesn't work I resort to getting drunk and start a fight. At that moment, I realize that I should just get on a slow boat to China.

The next time you are given the opportunity to give a speech, remember to start your presentation with a graphic and appropriate story.the One Minute Professorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18267645203226719140noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5217043096229895402.post-79714440295986649082016-01-01T11:00:00.000-08:002015-12-28T10:08:03.288-08:00ConnectionsYou have two options in life. You will have dreams and hopes and goals and plans. First, you can choose whether you believe them and claim them as yours. Or, second, you can choose to dismiss these as just selfish and hopeless acts of vanity. One will bring you happiness, joy and prosperity. The other is certain to bring you disappointment, regret and resentment. Napoleon Hill is famous for saying "what the mind can conceive, and believe ... it will achieve." Every successful person in life understands that the secret to success is dreaming BIG, believing that it is possible and then through everything they say and do - make that dream a reality.
I suppose that if I told you that you could find like minded people in the secret society of Skull and Bones, you would be intrigued and give serious thought to joining. The problem with that is that membership is a) through invitation only; and b) reserved for enrolled students at Yale. I hope you aren't too disappointed. Well, I know of another international organization that provides great opportunities to help you improve your communication skills. Additionally, this organization has a learning program to mentor you through a variety of leadership experiences. Is this something that sounds attractive to you?

Toastmasters International is more like a Mastermind Group for Speakers and Leaders than a fraternal organization like the Kiwanis, the Rotary Club or the Freemasons. In this blog, I will be sharing how local groups are applying the Drink, Speak and Lead model to assist their members in being the best speakers and leaders they can possibly be, through a structured and easy to follow educational program, practice opportunities and fulfilling leadership assignments and roles.

It's a new year and a fresh opportunity to turn your resolution into a reality!
